SU’s flagship programme Siyakhula aimed at developing the capacity for diversity amongst its staff is an authentic response to the need for a more humanised working environment anchored on human values. SU’s diversity capacity development programme, named Siyakhula – a Nguni word that means “we are growing” was relaunched in 2019 with the vision to develop and advance competencies that underpin institutional transformation and culture change. Siyakhula inspires an appreciation for our shared humanity as colleagues of SU by creating spaces for engagement and conversation, giving staff an opportunity to learn more about themselves and their society through engaging with fellow colleagues on the things that sit at the core of our humanity. Embracing diverse thoughts, ideas, beliefs, abilities, people and cultures is a critical capacity to cultivate if one is to live freely in this world and honour the freedom of others.
Topics of engagement include:
- Pathways to Healing
- Strengthening relational capacities
- Harnessing Ubuntu at work
- Microaggressions and Cultural Humility
- Value Based Leadership

SiyakhulaLive

Siyakhula Live is an award-winning radio show. It is an important way for Siyakhula to reach the community beyond the immediate university environment while integrating the university into its surrounds. The show has become a significant part of the Siyakhula portfolio and vision in that it taps into the power of radio to create meaningful dialogue, change perspectives and mobilise engagement and commitment to issues that affect SU and issues that are of national importance.
The show is designed centrally along the Imbizo 365 Calendar of Engagement themes, thereby ensuring synergized institutional engagement. Since its inception in 2020, the show has hosted key thinkers, academic and social justice and community development practitioners who contribute insight and perspective for a changing society rooted in social justice and respect for human diversity and dignity.
