The Institutional Transformation Committee (ITC) at Stellenbosch University (SU) serves as a strategic body focused on promoting comprehensive and meaningful transformation within the university’s structures.
Established to ensure alignment with South Africa’s broader transformation agenda and policies, the committee plays a critical role in fostering inclusivity, equity, diversity and social justice within the university.
The committee’s primary mission is to guide and oversee the implementation of policies and initiatives that advance the transformation of Stellenbosch University. Its vision is to create an environment where all members of the university, irrespective of race, gender, socio-economic background, or other differences, have equal access to opportunities and are empowered to succeed and contribute to the university’s growth and global impact.
The ITC is responsible for:
- Advising the university’s executive management on transformation-related matters.
- Reviewing and recommending transformation-related policies, strategies, and initiatives.
- Monitoring and evaluating the progress of institutional transformation efforts.
- Promoting collaboration across various university departments, faculties, and student organisations to drive change.
- Supporting the development of training programs, workshops, and campaigns that raise awareness and foster inclusivity.
The ITC regularly reports to the university’s governance structures, including the Council and Senate. These reports detail the progress of transformation initiatives, including challenges faced and strategies implemented to address them.
Transformation Committees
Stellenbosch University is committed to being inclusive, responsive and impactful.
Transformation at SU is a process of perpetual and profound, intentional and structured, comprehensive and deep change and renewal that seeks individual, institutional and societal life of dignity, freedom, equality, healing and justice for all (SU Transformation Policy 2025)
Faculty and Responsibility Centre Transformation Committees are mandated by the Stellenbosch University Institutional Transformation Committee (ITC) (a sub-committee of the Rectorate) and the SU Transformation Policy and Plan. The committees are commissioned by the Dean or Senior director, as accountable officers. The TCs advance Vision 2040 and the Transformation Policy (2024) and uphold the principles of inclusivity, equity and equality.
The Centre for the Advancement of Social Impact and Transformation programme manager for Staff, Monitoring and Evaluation serves as a member of each of the current 16 TCs.
