SU’s flagship programme Siyakhula aimed at developing the capacity for diversity amongst its staff is an authentic response to the need for a more humanised working environment anchored on human values. SU’s diversity capacity development programme, named Siyakhula – a Nguni word that means “we are growing” was relaunched in 2019 with the vision to develop and advance competencies that underpin institutional transformation and culture change. Siyakhula inspires an appreciation for our shared humanity as colleagues of SU by creating spaces for engagement and conversation, giving staff an opportunity to learn more about themselves and their society through engaging with fellow colleagues on the things that sit at the core of our humanity. Embracing diverse thoughts, ideas, beliefs, abilities, people and cultures is a critical capacity to cultivate if one is to live freely in this world and honour the freedom of others.
